Using Architecture to Stay Cool
Middle Eastern countries have a reputation for reaching extremely hot temperatures. As a result, the people there used architecture as a means to live with the heat. They built towers that would catch cool air and circulate it. This would push out hot air. This idea continues today with air ducts.
Incorporation of Cross Ventilation
The Victorians used airflow to keep their homes at a comfortable temperature. These homes had high ceilings, recessed windows, and covered porches for cross ventilation. These elements are used in the design of homes today.
The Modern HVAC System
During the mid-1800s, Dr. John Gorrie, an inventor, had a desire to cool cities in the summer months. He developed a system that uses cooling coils to control humidity. He got a patent for the device and refined it.
In 1904, Dr. Gorrie’s system was used to develop a refrigeration system that was used in the Missouri State Building. This is the first time this system was used in a public building. Over time, cooling and heating systems were installed in public theaters.
Although people were pleased by the HVAC system, it was too expensive for residential properties. As a result, H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman developed a window sill unit in 1932. By the 1960s, most homes had an HVAC system.
